My geological research concerns thermal emission spectroscopy and its potential for mineral identification. The minerals I am studying include oxides, carbonates, and sulfates, phosphates, and chlorides.

To learn more about thermal infrared (vibrational) spectroscopy and how the ASU TES lab is gearing their research toward understanding the surface composition of Mars, visit the Thermal Emission Spectrometer (TES) Home Page.

The TES instrument is orbiting Mars aboard the Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) spacecraft . Launch occurred on November 7, 1996. The spacecraft arrived at Mars on September 11, 1997.

The THEMIS instrument is orbiting Mars aboard the 2001 Mars Odyssey spacecraft . Launch occurred on April 7, 2001. The spacecraft arrived at Mars on October 23, 2001.

Here is a list of my publications.

Other Things In Which I'm Interested

  • My non-academic interests include Sports (like softball, soccer, and hang gliding) and Travel.

  • I had a beloved dog named Oatmeal, a 13-year-old, wire-haired, fox terrier.

  • I enjoy a vast variety of music and also enjoy spending time working on my desert-landscaped yard.
  • Miscellaneous Junk

      All men dream; but not equally. Those that dream at night
      in the dusty recesses of their minds wake in the day to find that
      it was vanity. But the dreamers of the day are dangerous men;
      for they may act their dream with open eyes, and make it possible. -Tennyson

      A Few Thoughts:
    • A day without sunshine is like, you know, night.
    • I wonder how much deeper the ocean would be without sponges in it.
    • If a hermit crab doesn't have a shell, is he homeless or naked?
    • War doesn't determine who is right, war determines who is left.
